Ghanaian actor Kwaku Manu has raised an interesting debate about the different opportunities that can come with political loyalty, particularly for celebrities who openly support political parties.
According to him, the experiences of actors Agya Koo and John Dumelo provide an interesting basis for comparing how much individuals contribute to their respective political parties and the positions or opportunities they eventually receive.
Kwaku Manu questioned who between the two actors has worked harder for their respective political party and what each has been able to achieve politically. His remarks have drawn attention to the different ways entertainers participate in Ghanaian politics, from campaigning and public advocacy to contesting elections.
Agya Koo has been associated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and has actively participated in the party’s political campaigns over the years. John Dumelo, on the other hand, has been a prominent supporter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and eventually entered active politics, winning the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary election in 2024.
The discussion also touches on a broader issue: whether political parties adequately recognise members who dedicate years of their time, influence and resources to supporting them. Kwaku Manu’s comparison has therefore opened up debate over whether political loyalty should translate into appointments, elected positions or other opportunities when a party takes power.
