The Bank of Ghana has clarified that Ghana will not get a new GH¢500 denomination under the upcoming Heritage Series of banknotes.
According to the central bank, the new series will maintain the existing denominations, ranging from GH¢1 to GH¢200, while introducing upgraded security features and improved durability.
The Heritage Series is scheduled to be officially launched on November 3, 2026, with designs expected to highlight Ghana’s history, culture, national heroes and other elements of the country’s identity.
The Bank of Ghana has also explained that the upgraded notes will continue to use cotton-based material rather than polymer, although the substrate will be reinforced to improve durability.
Importantly, Ghanaians will not need to rush to exchange their current money. The existing cedi notes will remain legal tender and will circulate alongside the new Heritage Series after its launch.
