Pressure is mounting on the government to settle the future of Gold Fields Ghana’s Tarkwa mining operation, with residents and other stakeholders expressing concern over the uncertainty surrounding the company’s lease.

The development comes as Gold Fields awaits a decision on its application to extend five mining leases at Tarkwa, which are scheduled to expire in April 2027. The company submitted its renewal application in November 2025 and has since been engaged in discussions with the government over the terms of a possible extension.

The issue has become increasingly important for the Tarkwa area because the mine is a major economic contributor and provides employment and business opportunities for people within its host communities. Recent demonstrations by residents and youth have highlighted the level of concern over what could happen if the operation is disrupted.

Gold Fields has warned that continued uncertainty over the leases could have a significant effect on its business. The company has also indicated that the lack of clarity surrounding the renewal is affecting investor confidence, while maintaining that it remains committed to continuing its operations in Ghana.

The government, however, has maintained that it is committed to renewing the Tarkwa lease but has ruled out an automatic extension. Authorities have indicated that Gold Fields’ plans and the conditions attached to any renewal must first be carefully assessed.

With the current leases approaching their expiry date, attention is now focused on the negotiations between the government and Gold Fields. The outcome is expected to have implications not only for the mining company but also for employment, local businesses, government revenue and the wider investment environment in Ghana’s mining sector.
