The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has issued a strong warning to traders, shop owners and residents ahead of a major sanitation exercise being held across the capital today, Saturday, September 5, 2026.
The Assembly says anyone who refuses to take part in the exercise, interferes with the clean-up or continues trading during the designated period could be arrested and fined, with offenders potentially facing prosecution before the Sanitation Court.
The Post-Homowo clean-up forms part of the September edition of the National Sanitation Day initiative and is aimed at tackling waste and improving the general condition of public spaces in Accra following the Homowo celebrations.
The exercise is scheduled to run from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, during which the AMA has directed shops, stalls, tabletop businesses and other trading activities to remain closed.
Residents and business operators have also been encouraged to take responsibility for the areas around their premises by clearing rubbish, removing weeds, cleaning road edges and helping to open up blocked drains.
Major locations targeted include Graphic Road, as well as the stretch from Kwame Nkrumah Circle through Avenor and Caprice to Abeka Junction along J.J. Rawlings Avenue. Other areas identified by the Assembly as requiring urgent attention will also receive sanitation teams.
The AMA says enforcement teams will be deployed to ensure that the directive is followed, while Assembly Members are expected to mobilise residents and coordinate activities within their respective electoral areas.
The Assembly has further called on transport operators, food vendors, religious organisations, companies, youth groups, NGOs and community organisations to contribute personnel and resources towards the exercise.
According to the AMA, the broader objective is not only to clean Accra but also to promote public health, improve the appearance of the capital and encourage residents to develop a stronger sense of responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean.
