The government has given a fresh update on plans for the much-anticipated Accra–Kumasi Expressway, with Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson announcing that the project’s full funding is expected to be in place by the close of this year.
According to the Finance Minister, government intends to finance the major road project without taking on new loans, a move he says would make the project unusual in Ghana’s infrastructure history.
Dr Ato Forson disclosed the latest financing timeline during discussions surrounding the 2026 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review. He indicated that about US$1.7 billion has already been secured and placed in a dedicated account at the Bank of Ghana, pending the start of the main construction works.
The latest announcement comes at a time when significant preparatory work is already taking place along the proposed route. Engineers from the Ghana Armed Forces have reportedly cleared approximately 170 kilometres out of the 176-kilometre corridor, leaving only about six kilometres to complete.
The military engineering team has been working on the right-of-way to make room for the major construction phase. The Ghana Armed Forces recently indicated that their team was advancing towards Sawua, describing the remaining section as the final stretch of the clearing exercise.
The proposed road is expected to be a six-lane, two-way expressway, designed to transform movement between Accra and Kumasi. Once completed, the project is expected to reduce travelling time, ease pressure on existing roads and improve the movement of passengers and goods between the two major cities.
Beyond transportation, the expressway is also expected to open up economic opportunities for communities along the corridor by improving access to markets and making the movement of goods more efficient.
For now, attention is focused on completing the remaining section of the corridor while government works toward securing the rest of the financing. If the funding target is achieved as announced, the project could move another major step closer to its long-awaited construction phase.
