Kumasi Mayor Leads Citywide Demolition Exercise to Tackle Congestion and Crime
The Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, is spearheading a citywide enforcement exercise aimed at demolishing unauthorized structures and shutting down locations suspected of serving as drug peddling hotspots across the Ashanti Regional capital.
The ongoing operation forms part of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly’s broader strategy to decongest the city, improve public safety, and strengthen efforts to combat crime within the metropolis.
According to city authorities, the exercise targets illegally erected structures that obstruct roads, pedestrian walkways, and public spaces, while also focusing on areas identified by security agencies as centers for suspected illicit drug activities and other criminal operations.
The Mayor has emphasized that the initiative is intended to restore order and ensure that Kumasi remains a safe and well-organized city for residents, businesses, and visitors. He stressed that unauthorized developments and criminal hideouts undermine the city’s growth and pose significant risks to public safety.
The task force, working alongside security personnel and relevant city authorities, has been carrying out demolitions and enforcement actions in various parts of the metropolis. Officials say the operation will continue until all identified illegal structures and suspected crime-prone locations have been addressed.
Authorities have urged residents and property developers to comply with building regulations and obtain the necessary permits before putting up structures. They also encouraged the public to cooperate with the exercise and report suspicious activities to the appropriate security agencies.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly believes the operation will contribute to improved sanitation, smoother traffic flow, enhanced security, and a more orderly urban environment as the city continues its development agenda.
Residents have been advised to support the initiative by adhering to city regulations and helping maintain law and order throughout the metropolis.
