President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to commit GH¢1 billion from the 2027 national budget to a revolving National Housing Fund, in a move aimed at improving access to decent and affordable accommodation across Ghana.
The proposed allocation forms part of a GH¢3 billion funding arrangement intended to support housing projects and make it easier for more people to finance their own homes. The President announced the initiative during the opening of the National Conference on Housing Finance in Accra on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
One of the major challenges facing many Ghanaian workers is the difficulty of raising large sums of money to secure accommodation . Traders, artisans, farmers and other self-employed people may earn regular incomes but often struggle to qualify for traditional mortgages because they cannot provide the conventional employment and income documents required by financial institutions.
To address the problem, the President has also announced plans for an Easy Rent program, under which the National Housing Fund would pay the rent advance for eligible workers, allowing them to repay the amount through monthly installments. If implemented as outlined, the initiative could offer some relief to workers and young families who struggle to raise several months’ rent before moving into a new home.
The government also intends to attract funding from sources such as pension funds, insurance companies, development finance institutions and Ghanaians living abroad to help expand housing investment. However, the success of these plans will depend on their implementation, the financing conditions offered and whether ordinary households can genuinely afford the homes and rental arrangements provided.
For many Ghanaians, the big question is whether these measures will translate into lower housing costs and easier access to accommodation, especially for young people starting their lives and families struggling with rent advances.
