Ghana and India are taking steps to strengthen their relationship, with both countries exploring new opportunities in trade, investment, technology, defence, pharmaceuticals and other key sectors. The discussions formed part of India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr S. Jaishankar’s official visit to Accra.

Dr Jaishankar met President John Dramani Mahama as well as Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa during his visit. The engagements focused on expanding the countries’ existing comprehensive partnership and identifying areas where both sides can work more closely together.

President Mahama highlighted the growing economic relationship between the two countries, revealing that Ghana’s exports to India have increased from about US$3 billion to almost US$7 billion. He also pointed to India’s support in areas such as agricultural machinery, automobiles, infrastructure and technology.

Healthcare was another major area of discussion, with Ghana seeking stronger partnerships that could help expand local pharmaceutical and vaccine production. The government says such cooperation forms part of efforts to improve Ghana’s health security and reduce dependence on imported medicines.

The two countries also exchanged agreements covering scientific research, education and agriculture, signalling plans to deepen cooperation beyond trade and diplomacy. Ghana and India are expected to continue discussions aimed at turning their strengthened relationship into more practical projects and investments.
