The Auditor-General, Dr Pamela Graham, has announced plans to strengthen efforts to recover public funds lost through irregular or unlawful transactions, while also making the process easier for citizens to monitor.

According to her, officials and institutions found responsible for improper use of state resources could face surcharges as part of measures to enforce accountability and protect the public purse.

She also revealed plans for a digital tracker that will allow the public to follow the progress of audit recommendations, recoveries and unresolved cases. The initiative is expected to provide greater visibility into what happens after audit findings are presented.

Dr Graham further indicated that technology, including artificial intelligence, would increasingly be used to support the auditing process and identify potential financial irregularities more efficiently.

The move forms part of broader efforts by the Audit Service to improve transparency and ensure that public institutions take action when financial breaches are identified.
