The government has acknowledged that rivalry and overlapping responsibilities among some security agencies are creating challenges in efforts to secure Ghana’s ports and prevent the movement of illicit drugs.

Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu said the situation requires stronger cooperation among the various agencies responsible for security at the country’s ports. According to him, effective intelligence sharing and coordinated operations are necessary to close loopholes that criminals could exploit.

He noted that the fight against drug trafficking cannot be handled effectively when security institutions operate in competition with one another. Instead, the agencies must work together and ensure that information gathered by one institution is quickly shared with others when necessary.

The comments come amid renewed concerns over the use of Ghana’s ports as possible routes for the movement of narcotics and other prohibited goods. Authorities have been under pressure to strengthen surveillance and coordination at the country’s entry points.

The government says improving collaboration among security agencies will be key to protecting Ghana’s ports and making it more difficult for traffickers to exploit weaknesses within the system.
