The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Volta Region has urged President John Dramani Mahama to remove Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi from office following his recent exchanges with Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
Volta Regional NPP Chairman Makafui Kofi Woanyah made the call during a press conference in Ho, where he accused the GoldBod boss of showing disrespect towards the Minority Leader in connection with questions surrounding an alleged US$1.7 billion loss involving gold-related transactions.
According to Mr Woanyah, Mr Afenyo-Markin has the right, as a parliamentarian and citizen, to demand explanations about the management of the country’s resources. He argued that public officials should respond to such concerns with facts and accountability rather than resorting to personal attacks.
The NPP chairman further maintained that the conduct attributed to Sammy Gyamfi raises questions about the standards expected from government appointees. He therefore called on President Mahama to take disciplinary action, insisting that public office comes with responsibility and accountability.
Mr Woanyah also said the issue has particular significance for the Volta Region because of Mr Afenyo-Markin’s family ties to the area. He stressed that political disagreements should not be allowed to result in personal attacks, adding that Ghanaians deserve clear answers on matters involving public funds and national resources.
The Volta NPP has subsequently thrown its support behind calls for further scrutiny of the reported US$1.7 billion loss. Mr Woanyah said the party would continue to demand transparency and urged the government to ensure that all public officials are held to the same standards of accountability.
