Students at the University of Cape Coast have joined calls for mandatory warning labels on packaged foods containing excessive amounts of sugar, salt and unhealthy fats.
The campaign is aimed at helping consumers make better-informed choices by making potentially harmful nutritional contents easier to identify when shopping.
The students are pushing for a system that would place prominent warnings on products that exceed recommended levels of certain nutrients. They argue that many consumers may not fully understand the nutritional information currently displayed on food packaging.
The campaign also seeks to draw greater attention to the growing concerns surrounding unhealthy diets and their possible impact on public health.
The students believe clearer labelling would give consumers more information at the point of purchase and encourage food manufacturers to pay greater attention to the nutritional quality of their products.
Do you think Ghana should make warning labels compulsory on foods high in sugar, salt and unhealthy fats?
