Teaching and learning in schools across Ghana could be disrupted after three major pre-tertiary teacher unions officially began a nationwide strike on Friday, September 25.
The action follows unresolved concerns raised by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Pre-Tertiary Education Teachers’ Union (PRETAG).
Among the issues highlighted by the unions are outstanding promotion-related payments, salary placement for newly promoted teachers and other employment-related matters that they say remain unresolved.
The unions had previously given government a deadline to address their concerns, but with no acceptable resolution reached by the deadline, they proceeded with the industrial action.
The strike is expected to put additional pressure on government to engage the teacher unions and find a solution that will allow teachers to return to the classrooms.
