The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has called for an independent investigation into allegations that some parents are being asked to pay money before their children can secure places in Senior High Schools.
The Bishops say the reports are worrying, particularly because the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) is intended to provide students with access to schools without parents having to pay officials, agents or intermediaries to obtain placements.
According to the Conference, anyone who demands or accepts money in exchange for a school placement should face appropriate sanctions if investigations establish that the allegations are true. Depending on the circumstances, the Bishops say such individuals could face disciplinary measures or criminal prosecution.
The call comes at a time when the 2026 SHS placement exercise has been generating frustration among some parents and students. There have been reports of families struggling to secure preferred schools, with some parents seeking assistance at placement resolution centres.
The Catholic Bishops, however, have also cautioned against making accusations without evidence, stressing that investigations should establish the facts and ensure that innocent public officials are not unfairly accused.
The Conference is therefore urging authorities to make the placement process more transparent and accountable while taking firm action against anyone found to be exploiting parents during the admission process.
