Education Minister Signals Tougher Punishment Regime for Indisciplined SHS Students
The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has hinted at a major review of disciplinary measures in Senior High Schools (SHSs), saying the government is considering tougher sanctions to address the growing problem of student indiscipline across the country. According to the minister, the proposed reforms will empower the Ghana Education Service (GES) with stronger authority to deal decisively with students who engage in acts of misconduct.
Speaking on the issue, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu stated that the current disciplinary framework may no longer be adequate to address rising cases of violence, vandalism, bullying, drug abuse, and other forms of unacceptable behaviour in schools. He stressed that the time has come to rethink and strengthen the punishment regime to ensure discipline is restored in educational institutions.
“We may have to rethink and review our punishment regime, and to clothe the Ghana Education Service with authority to deal ruthlessly with students who misbehave,” the minister said. He explained that maintaining discipline is essential to creating a safe and conducive learning environment where both students and teachers can thrive without fear or disruption.
The minister’s remarks come amid increasing public concern over repeated incidents of student misconduct in some senior high schools. The proposed overhaul is expected to equip the GES with stronger legal and administrative powers to enforce discipline while promoting responsible behaviour among students. The government is expected to engage relevant stakeholders before any new disciplinary measures are formally introduced.
