A tragic incident has claimed the life of a 17-year-old final-year student of Asanteman Senior High School, identified as Harrison, in Meduma, located in the Kwabre East District. The heartbreaking event occurred on Friday, May 8, 2026, during a heavy rainstorm that swept through parts of the Ashanti Region.
According to reports, Harrison had returned home from school and plugged his iPhone 6 into a charger before continuing to use the device. During the storm, a nearby lightning strike is believed to have triggered a sudden power surge, which traveled through the charger and electrocuted him instantly.
Witnesses say the teenager sustained severe burns around his neck and ears as a result of the incident. Despite efforts to assist him, he was pronounced dead at the scene. His body has since been deposited at the morgue for preservation and further examination.
The incident has left family members, friends, and the school community in deep shock and mourning, especially as Harrison was preparing to sit for the upcoming WASSCE examinations.
Police have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic death, while safety experts continue to warn the public against using electronic devices connected to power sources during thunderstorms.
