The Ghana Police Service has successfully disrupted a suspected robbery plot in Buipe, located in the Savannah Region, leading to the arrest of two individuals and the deaths of two others during a subsequent operation.

According to Savannah Regional Deputy Police Commander, Reynolds Manteaw, the incident began on April 26, 2026, when a patrol team traveling along the Yapei–Tamale road came across three armed men.

Accra-based Citi News reported that the suspects fired at an armoured police vehicle, prompting officers to return fire. The attackers then escaped into nearby bushes, abandoning a locally made firearm and a spent cartridge. Intelligence-led operations later resulted in the arrest of two suspects, Osman Abdulai, also known as “Landan,” and Umar Seidu, in Tamale on April 27.

During questioning, the suspects allegedly revealed that they had intended to carry out a robbery in Yapei but called it off after being involved in a road accident. They also admitted to engaging the police patrol team and identified their accomplices as Babuga, Kilor, and Malami. Police stated that the suspects subsequently led officers to a location along the Yapei–Salaga road, where a modified single-barrel shotgun and five rounds of ammunition were recovered.

In a follow-up operation, two of the alleged accomplices were reportedly killed during an exchange of gunfire with police, while others remain at large as investigations continue. On April 29, officers traced the remaining suspects to a guest house in Buipe. ACP Manteaw indicated that during efforts to apprehend them, one suspect, identified as Babuga, allegedly attacked officers with a machete and was shot. Both suspects sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to the Buipe District Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

Their remains have since been transferred to St. Ann’s Hospital in Damongo for preservation and autopsy, while investigations into the incident are ongoing.
