DVLA to Remove Registration Year from Vehicle Number Plates Under New System
The Chief Executive Officer of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Julius Neequaye Kotey, has announced that the year of registration will no longer be displayed on vehicle number plates as part of a planned overhaul of Ghana’s vehicle registration system.
According to Mr. Kotey, the change is intended to discourage the practice of motorists delaying the registration of newly imported vehicles simply to obtain a number plate bearing a preferred registration year.
“There will no longer be a year of registration displayed on vehicle number plates, so there will be no need for anyone to delay registering a vehicle just to flex with the year shown on the number plate,” he explained while outlining some of the key features of the proposed new number plate system.
The DVLA CEO said the redesigned number plates will incorporate enhanced security and identification features aimed at improving vehicle registration, reducing fraud, and strengthening law enforcement efforts. He noted that the reforms form part of the Authority’s broader strategy to modernise vehicle registration and align Ghana’s system with international best practices.
Mr. Kotey added that removing the registration year from number plates would also encourage vehicle owners to register their vehicles promptly, eliminating unnecessary delays caused by the desire to secure plates associated with a particular year.
The planned reforms are expected to improve the efficiency of the registration process while ensuring a more secure and reliable vehicle identification system across the country.
The DVLA is expected to provide further details on the rollout and implementation of the new vehicle number plate system in the coming months.
