The Minority in Parliament has called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide a detailed account of the funds used to bring Ghanaian nationals back home from South Africa following recent developments involving Ghanaians in the country.
The Minority says Ghanaians deserve clarity on how public funds were utilised during the repatriation exercise. According to them, the Ministry should disclose the total amount spent, the specific items covered, and other relevant details surrounding the operation.
The demand comes amid renewed attention to the safety and welfare of Ghanaian nationals living in South Africa, particularly in the wake of incidents of xenophobic violence that have previously resulted in the destruction of businesses and properties belonging to Ghanaians.
Beyond the repatriation costs, the Minority is also asking the government to provide an update on efforts to secure compensation for Ghanaian victims whose properties were destroyed during xenophobic attacks. They want to know what steps have been taken to ensure that affected citizens receive justice and appropriate compensation for their losses.
The Minority has therefore urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to account for the resources committed to the repatriation exercise while also giving Parliament and the Ghanaian public a clear update on measures being pursued to obtain accountability for the losses suffered by Ghanaian nationals in South Africa.
