The Bono Regional Police Command has arrested a 36-year-old man, identified as Gyamfi Christian, in connection with an alleged fake gold transaction involving GH¢1.1 million in the Berekum Municipality.
The arrest followed a complaint from 29-year-old gold aggregator Christopher Awuni, who told the Police that four men claiming to be gold sellers sold him 110 troy ounces of gold for GH¢1.1 million in July 2026. The gold was later tested and found to be fake, and the Police have retained it as an exhibit.
According to the Bono Regional Police Command, intelligence-led investigations led to Christian’s arrest on August 17, 2026, at his hideout in Wamfie in the Dormaa East District.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly admitted taking part in the transaction and told investigators that the deal was completed at Drobo in the Jaman South Municipality. He also reportedly identified three other alleged accomplices — Abraham, alias “Frenchman,” said to be the leader of the group, Isaac Antwi and Balthazar.
The three alleged accomplices remain at large as Police continue efforts to arrest them. Preliminary investigations have also linked the group to another alleged fake gold transaction in which a separate victim reportedly lost GH¢1.4 million at Drobo earlier this year.
Christian remains in Police custody and is assisting with investigations. The Bono Regional Police Command has meanwhile urged members of the public to exercise caution and conduct proper verification before committing money to gold transactions.
The case highlights the importance of verifying gold through credible and authorised channels before making large payments, particularly in high-value transactions.
