The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) is pushing for tougher controls on the amount of money vehicle owners demand from commercial drivers each day, saying excessive targets may be contributing to road crashes.

According to the Authority, some drivers are placed under serious financial pressure to complete several rounds before the close of the day because they must meet targets set by vehicle owners.

The NRSA says this pressure can push drivers to speed, make unnecessary trips and take dangerous decisions on the road simply because they are trying to raise enough money to satisfy their owners.

NRSA Director-General Abraham Amaliba believes the daily targets should be regulated in a similar way to how rent charges are controlled. He stressed that making money should never become more important than protecting a driver’s life.

The Authority is currently engaging commercial drivers and transport unions as part of preparations for the busy Christmas period, when road traffic and passenger movement are expected to increase.
