President John Dramani Mahama has authorised the immediate release of GH¢300 million from the Contingency Fund to support flood victims and strengthen measures to prevent future flooding across the country.
The directive, issued to the Minister for Finance, comes in response to the devastating floods that recently affected parts of Accra and other communities in southern Ghana, leaving several people displaced and causing extensive damage to homes, businesses and public infrastructure.
According to a statement from the Presidency, GH¢150 million of the amount has been allocated for emergency relief operations to assist flood-affected individuals and communities. The remaining GH¢150 million will be invested in flood mitigation projects aimed at reducing the risk and impact of future flooding.
The President has also directed the deployment of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to support the National Disaster Management Organisation in ongoing rescue and relief efforts.
The government says the intervention forms part of a broader strategy to provide immediate assistance to victims while implementing long-term solutions to Ghana’s recurring flooding problem. Planned interventions include strengthening drainage infrastructure and improving flood control systems in vulnerable communities.
The latest funding comes as emergency responders continue to assess the extent of the destruction caused by the heavy rains, with authorities assuring affected residents that relief efforts will continue in the coming days.
