World Bank Blames Finance Ministry’s Fiscal Controls for Delaying GARID Flood Project

The World Bank has attributed major delays in the implementation of Ghana’s $350 million Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project to fiscal controls introduced by the Ministry of Finance in 2025. The Bank says the funding restrictions slowed critical flood-control works in Accra despite the project being fully financed, a concern that has gained urgency following the recent floods that claimed at least 12 lives.

Mahama Approves GH¢300 Million for Flood Relief, Mitigation Measures

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate release of GH¢300 million from the Contingency Fund to support flood victims and finance long-term flood mitigation projects following the recent floods that affected parts of Accra and other communities in southern Ghana. The package includes GH¢150 million for emergency relief and another GH¢150 million for measures to reduce future flooding.
