Ghana Ready to Host AU Extraordinary Summit on Health as Leaders Gather in Accra
President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana is fully prepared to welcome African Heads of State, Ministers of Health, media representatives, and development partners to Accra for the African Union (AU) Extraordinary Summit on Health.
The high-level two-day summit, taking place from July 21 to July 22, 2026, is expected to bring together key decision-makers from across the continent to discuss pressing public health challenges and chart a path toward stronger healthcare systems in Africa.
According to President Mahama, the summit will focus on accelerating efforts to end AIDS and tuberculosis by 2030, reducing maternal mortality, and strengthening resilient health systems capable of responding effectively to future health emergencies.
The meeting is also expected to encourage greater collaboration among African countries, international partners, and health institutions to improve access to quality healthcare and achieve the continent’s long-term public health goals.
Hosting the summit underscores Ghana’s growing role in promoting regional cooperation and advancing health initiatives across Africa. The gathering is expected to produce important commitments and strategies that will shape the future of healthcare delivery on the continent.
