The inaugural group of 430 Ghanaian pilgrims set for the 2026 Hajj has officially departed from Tamale Airport to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The flight took off on Friday at 11:30 GMT, with arrival scheduled for 4:00 p.m. GMT. Altogether, about 6,000 pilgrims are expected to travel from Ghana on 18 separate flights between May 1 and May 18, 2026.

Before takeoff, Northern Regional Minister Ali Adolf John, together with representatives of the Ghana Hajj Board, met with the travellers and offered their final words ahead of the journey.

Large crowds of relatives, friends, and supporters also gathered at the airport to see off loved ones embarking on the sacred pilgrimage.

Speaking to the media, Communications Director of the Ghana Hajj Board, Mohammed Amin Lamtey, assured the public that all necessary arrangements had been made to ensure a smooth and successful pilgrimage exercise. He explained that a delegation had already been sent to Saudi Arabia to welcome the pilgrims upon arrival. According to him, the group will spend three days in Madina before continuing to Mecca.

He further noted that communication channels had been strengthened this year to guarantee the proper handling and dissemination of important information.

Mr. John, on his part, urged the pilgrims to obey the laws of Saudi Arabia and maintain behaviour that positively represents Ghana. He reminded them that beyond their personal religious obligations, they also carry the reputation of the nation, encouraging them to embody Ghana’s values of peace, unity, and tolerance throughout the pilgrimage.
