A relationship dispute has taken a dramatic turn after a young Ghanaian man dragged his former girlfriend and her mother before the popular courtroom-style radio programme, Oyerepa Afutuo, demanding the refund of nearly GH¢150,000 he claims to have spent during their relationship.

According to the man, he financially supported his ex-girlfriend throughout her teacher training education, only for her to allegedly end the relationship unexpectedly shortly after completing school. He told the programme that he made several sacrifices to ensure the woman successfully completed her studies and now feels betrayed after the breakup.

Detailing the expenses before the panel, the young man claimed he paid GH¢9,000 towards her teacher training college fees from Level 200 to Level 400. He further alleged that he gave her a monthly upkeep allowance of GH¢2,000, which he said amounted to about GH¢64,000 over the period of their relationship.

He also listed GH¢5,000 for examination-related expenses and an additional GH¢8,000 allegedly given to support the woman’s mother during difficult periods. According to him, there were several other expenses and forms of support he provided, bringing the total amount to nearly GH¢150,000.

The case has sparked intense reactions on social media, with many Ghanaians debating whether people in relationships are entitled to refunds for money spent on their partners after a breakup. While some sympathized with the young man and described his actions as a result of heartbreak and disappointment, others argued that support given in relationships should not be treated as loans unless there was a prior agreement.

Listeners of the programme also questioned the growing trend of lovers taking personal relationship matters to public platforms and media shows to seek justice or compensation after failed relationships.

The former girlfriend and her mother reportedly appeared before the programme to respond to the allegations, as discussions on the matter continue to trend online.
