The government has directed that an independent investigation be carried out into complaints of inaccurate electricity bills and defective meters reported by some residents in the Volta Region.
Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, announced the decision during the launch and sensitisation programme for the Turnkey Electrification Project in Ho.
According to the Minister, the investigation will be handled by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and the Energy Commission rather than the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), since the complaints are directed at the power distributor.
Dr Jinapor explained that electricity consumers are expected to settle their bills, but they must only be charged for the actual amount of power they consume. He said the investigation would establish whether faulty meters or billing errors contributed to the concerns raised by residents.
The Minister further assured affected customers that meters confirmed to be defective would be replaced. He added that consumers found to have paid more than they should have would receive credits to help recover the excess amounts over time.
Dr Jinapor urged residents to cooperate with the independent process and accept its findings, stressing that the exercise is intended to improve fairness, transparency and accountability in electricity billing across the region.
