The government has announced plans to pursue a more comprehensive approach to the development of Zongo communities across Ghana, with authorities calling for improvements that go beyond isolated projects.
Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Mahama Ayariga says Zongo development must be approached in a way that addresses the major challenges facing residents and creates better living conditions for communities.
According to the minister, the focus should include improvements in infrastructure, sanitation, education and other essential services needed to transform the communities.
He stressed that Zongo communities form an important part of Ghana’s social and cultural fabric and therefore deserve deliberate development programmes that can have a lasting impact.
The call comes amid renewed discussions about how government can improve conditions in densely populated Zongo areas, many of which continue to struggle with issues including poor sanitation, inadequate infrastructure and overcrowding.
The government’s position is that a coordinated redevelopment programme could help address these challenges while giving residents better opportunities and improving the overall appearance and living conditions of the communities.
