Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has recalled Members of Parliament from their recess to return to the House and deal with what has been described as urgent parliamentary business.

The recall is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 24, 2026, and continue until Friday, August 28, at Parliament House in Accra, with proceedings expected to begin at noon on the first day.

Speaker Bagbin exercised his authority under Order 58(4) of Parliament’s Standing Orders to summon the House despite the ongoing recess. However, his notice did not disclose the specific urgent matters that MPs are expected to consider during the five days sitting.

The decision has already generated political discussion, with Deputy Minority Whip and Tolon MP Habib Iddrisu questioning the need for the recall and describing it as unnecessary and a potential waste of taxpayers’ money.

On the other hand, the Majority side has defended the Speaker’s decision, arguing that Parliament can be recalled during recess whenever there is urgent business requiring the attention of the House.

The upcoming sitting is therefore expected to attract significant attention as lawmakers return earlier than anticipated to deliberate on matters considered important enough to warrant the extraordinary recall.
