Chairperson of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee and former Deputy Finance Minister, Hon. Abena Osei Asare, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to demand accountability over the reported $1.7 billion loss incurred by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) through its dealings with the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).

According to her, the reported loss, as cited by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), is significant and must be subjected to a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the financial setback.

Hon. Abena Osei Asare stressed the need for transparency and accountability, arguing that such a substantial amount of money could have been channelled into critical sectors of the economy.

She noted that the funds could have supported initiatives aimed at creating jobs, improving livelihoods and strengthening economic opportunities for Ghanaians.

The former Deputy Finance Minister therefore urged the government to ensure that the matter is properly investigated and that those responsible, if any wrongdoing is established, are held accountable.

Her call comes amid growing public interest in the financial operations involving the Bank of Ghana and GoldBod, particularly over the reported losses and their implications for Ghana’s economy.
