Security expert Paul Boateng has warned that simply increasing troop deployment in Bawku and nearby areas will not bring a permanent end to the long-running unrest. He explained that although soldiers can help reduce violence for a while, their presence does not tackle the root causes of the conflict.
He noted that when troops arrive, residents may hide indoors out of fear, but that alone cannot resolve the crisis. According to him, lasting peace in Bawku will require continuous dialogue, mediation, and sustainable strategies rather than relying solely on military force.
His remarks come after a recent incident involving the Ghana Armed Forces, which reported that an escort team protecting civilians was ambushed by unidentified gunmen at Binduri. In a statement issued by Veronica Adzo Arhin of the Ghana Navy, the military said the attack occurred on Monday, April 27, 2026, when a convoy carrying about 140 civilians from Bawku to Bolgatanga came under intense gunfire.
According to the military, three civilians lost their lives and one person sustained injuries. Soldiers escorting the convoy fired back, driving off the attackers and killing seven of them. Arms and ammunition, including a G3 rifle, loaded magazines, and extra rounds, were recovered from a suspect who reportedly fled into a mosque during the operation.
Responding to the situation, Mr. Boateng raised concerns about the growing circulation of weapons in the conflict area, stressing that Ghana's porous borders make it easier for arms to be smuggled in. He maintained that genuine peace has yet to be achieved in Bawku, warning that any belief to the contrary is misleading. He also cast doubt on current mediation efforts, including those led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu Il, pointing out that the Bawku conflict is distinct from the Dagbon chieftainc.. dispute between the Abudu and Andani royal gates. He emphasized that peace will only be possible when the people directly involved choose to embrace it. Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces say 21 individuals have been arrested so far to assist with investigations into the recent violence and disturbances in the area.
