One individual has been confirmed dead after a brutal armed assault on a passenger bus on Saturday, May 2, 2026. The bus, bearing registration number AS 4941-25, was travelling from Zebilla in the Upper East Region to Tamale in the Northern Region when it was ambushed near Nasia, close to Walewale in the North East Region.

The North East Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Robert Anibiik, confirmed the incident to MyJoyOnline but said details regarding the full number of casualties were not immediately available at the time of reporting.

According to eyewitnesses and initial findings, the attackers reportedly emerged from nearby bushes along the roadside and began firing indiscriminately, forcing the bus to stop. The barrage of gunfire penetrated the vehicle, fatally hitting one passenger who died instantly. Five others sustained injuries—some from flying glass and others from gunshots—and were quickly rushed to a nearby medical facility for urgent care. The deceased has since been conveyed to a local morgue for preservation and further examination.

Residents and transport operators have repeatedly expressed concerns about security along northern highways, particularly during nighttime travel. Police have appealed for calm while urging the public to stay alert, assuring that more updates will be shared as investigations continue.
