Ghana’s National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) says it has arrested 16 suspects following a major operation targeting groups allegedly involved in producing and distributing counterfeit Ghanaian and foreign currencies. The intelligence-led exercise led to the shutdown of four suspected printing centres across the Greater Accra Region and surrounding areas.
According to the NSCS, the operations were carried out between June 12 and July 24, 2026, after months of intelligence gathering. Security personnel reportedly recovered four currency-printing machines, six vehicles and two motorcycles believed to have been connected to the alleged activities.
Authorities also seized counterfeit notes valued at about US$543,000, GH¢196,600 and CFA60,000, which were allegedly ready for circulation. Additional unprocessed materials with face values running into millions of dollars, cedis and CFA francs were also recovered.
The investigation reportedly uncovered different groups allegedly performing various roles, including printing, transportation and distribution. Some of the locations allegedly used by the networks included residential properties and religious facilities, according to the NSCS.
The 16 suspects and seized exhibits have been handed over for further investigation and legal proceedings. The NSCS says prosecution is ongoing at the Accra High Court, while security teams continue efforts to locate other suspects allegedly connected to the operation.
