The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has disclosed that more people could be arrested as investigations continue into the nearly €225 million cocaine shipment intercepted by French authorities.
According to NACOC’s Acting Director of Public Affairs, Francis Opoku Amoah, the suspects already arrested in Ghana are believed to be connected to a wider network involved in the alleged trafficking operation. He said investigators are working to identify everyone who may have played a role.
The shipment, containing about 3.9 tonnes of cocaine, was intercepted at the French port of Dunkirk after arriving from Ghana in a container declared to contain plastic waste. The drugs were reportedly worth about €225 million on the street.
NACOC says some of the suspects had already been under surveillance for between one and two years before their arrests, as investigators monitored their activities and waited for an opportunity to take action.
The Commission has also said it is working with law-enforcement agencies in Ghana and abroad to trace other individuals allegedly connected to the network. NACOC insists that the investigation remains ongoing and further arrests are expected.
The case has generated renewed questions about how such a large quantity of cocaine allegedly passed through Ghana’s export system without being detected before reaching France. Several people have since been arrested or remanded as investigations into the shipment continue.
