TikTok is biggest consumer of data bundles on MTN Ghana network — Stephen Blewett
The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, has revealed that TikTok is currently the biggest consumer of data bundles on the telecommunications company’s network.
According to Mr Blewett, the popular short-video platform consumes more data than other major digital platforms used by MTN Ghana subscribers, with YouTube reportedly ranking next.
His comments come amid growing concerns among mobile users over the rapid depletion of data bundles, with some subscribers questioning why their data runs out faster than expected.
Mr Blewett has previously explained that changing smartphone usage patterns, particularly video streaming, background applications and automatic updates, have contributed significantly to increased data consumption. (Graphic Online)
The increasing popularity of video-based platforms such as TikTok means users can consume substantial amounts of data within a relatively short period, especially when watching videos continuously or using high-quality streaming settings.
The MTN Ghana CEO has therefore encouraged customers to be more conscious of their data usage and monitor which applications consume the most data on their devices.
The revelation also highlights the growing influence of social media and video-streaming platforms on mobile network traffic as more Ghanaians rely on smartphones for entertainment, communication, news and other online activities.
