President John Dramani Mahama has backed measures to stop workers at Ghana’s airports from approaching passengers and visitors for tips, warning that the practice could leave a negative impression of the country on international travelers.

The President said the behaviour of personnel working at the airport plays an important role in shaping how foreigners view Ghana. He therefore called on workers within the aviation sector to maintain professionalism, discipline, courtesy and quality customer service.

President Mahama made the remarks on Thursday, August 27, 2026, during the sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a new multi-purpose car park and airport hotel complex at the Accra International Airport.

He commended the Ghana Airports Company Limited, the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority and other institutions operating at the airport for taking stronger action against the solicitation of tips. According to him, every interaction involving immigration officers, baggage handlers, traffic managers and other airport service providers contributes to the overall image visitors form of Ghana.

The President stressed that Ghana’s reputation for hospitality must be protected through better service delivery and professional conduct. The Ghana Airports Company Limited has already taken disciplinary action against two car park workers over alleged incidents involving requests for tips from passengers.
