The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), under the leadership of its Director General, Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali, in collaboration with the Minister for Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has officially launched the “Life Jackets for Safety & Livelihoods” initiative aimed at improving safety on the country’s inland and coastal waterways.

The initiative forms part of the government’s broader efforts to reduce accidents and fatalities on water bodies while promoting safer transportation and economic activities for communities that depend on rivers, lakes, and coastal waters for their livelihoods.

As part of the launch, the authorities also commissioned a new team of Safety Guards who will be responsible for monitoring activities on water bodies, enforcing safety regulations, and educating water users on the importance of adhering to maritime safety standards.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali emphasized the critical role of life jackets in preventing avoidable deaths and injuries on Ghana’s waterways. He noted that many lives could be saved through increased awareness and the consistent use of approved safety equipment.

Transport Minister Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening maritime safety and protecting citizens who rely on water transport. He encouraged boat operators, fishermen, and passengers to embrace the initiative and prioritize safety at all times.

The “Life Jackets for Safety & Livelihoods” programme is expected to distribute life jackets to vulnerable communities and enhance safety education campaigns across the country. Authorities believe the initiative will significantly contribute to reducing water-related accidents while supporting sustainable livelihoods in fishing and transport sectors.

The launch marks another step in Ghana’s ongoing efforts to build a safer and more secure maritime environment for all users of the nation’s waterways.
