A National Service Personnel attached to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has been arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly stealing GH¢308,300 through a series of unauthorised Mobile Money transactions.
The accused, identified as Ebenezer Ghartey, pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared before the court. Prosecutors allege that he transferred the money from his supervisor’s MTN merchant account into his personal Mobile Money account over a seven-week period between March 31 and May 20, 2026.
Investigators told the court that an audit uncovered the missing funds after discrepancies were detected in the merchant account. The prosecution further alleged that the accused used part of the money to purchase a Hyundai Elantra, a Samsung television and household furniture.
Following his arrest by the Cantonments Police, the prosecution said Ghartey admitted to the offence in a caution statement, allegedly explaining that he committed the act because he “was not on salary” during his national service.
The court granted him bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with three sureties. One surety must provide landed property equivalent to the bail amount, while another must be a public servant earning at least GH¢5,000 monthly. The accused has also been ordered to report to investigators twice a week pending the next hearing.
The case has been adjourned to August 4, 2026, as investigations continue.
