Rent Commissioner Cracks Down on Hostel Fee Hikes, Warns Operators of Court Action
The Acting Commissioner of Rent, Frederick Opoku, has issued a strong warning to hostel operators across the country, directing them to immediately stop increasing hostel fees in defiance of government directives or face legal consequences.
Speaking on the matter, Mr. Opoku stressed that no hostel manager or operator should impose unauthorized fee increments on students. He cautioned that any operator found violating the directive would be reported to the Rent Control Department and could be taken to court.
“Do not pay any money to any hostel operator who increases fees after my directive. If they give you a letter, send a copy of it to rent control, and they will face us in court,” he stated.
The Acting Commissioner also urged students to remain vigilant and refuse any demands for increased accommodation fees that do not comply with the directive. He encouraged affected students to report such cases immediately to the Rent Control Department for swift action.
According to him, the department is committed to protecting students from unfair rental practices and ensuring that hostel operators adhere to existing regulations. He emphasized that the welfare of students remains a priority and that authorities will not hesitate to sanction operators who exploit tenants through arbitrary fee hikes.
The latest warning comes amid growing concerns among students over rising accommodation costs, with many expressing frustration about sudden increases in hostel fees despite economic challenges.
Mr. Opoku reiterated that the Rent Control Department is prepared to pursue legal action against any hostel operator who ignores the directive, adding that compliance is non-negotiable.
Students have therefore been advised to keep records of any notices or letters announcing fee increments and submit them to the Rent Control Department for investigation and possible legal action against offending operators.
