The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations has directed the management of Ghana Digital Centres Limited (GDCL) to immediately withdraw its decision to suspend the employment contracts of all staff following the recent flooding at the Accra Digital Centre.
The Ministry described the suspension directive as unacceptable, stressing that workers should not bear the consequences of a natural disaster. It instructed the management of GDCL to reverse the decision with immediate effect and ensure that all affected employees return to work.
The directive follows widespread public concern after management reportedly announced the temporary suspension of staff contracts in the wake of severe flooding that affected operations at the Accra Digital Centre.
According to the Ministry, while it acknowledges the operational challenges caused by the floods, any response to the situation must protect the welfare and rights of employees. It emphasised that decisions affecting workers must be guided by fairness, due process and existing labour laws.
The Ministry also indicated that it will continue engaging the management of Ghana Digital Centres to restore normal operations and address the damage caused by the flooding while safeguarding the livelihoods of staff.
The latest directive comes as government agencies continue assessing the impact of the recent floods that disrupted businesses and institutions across parts of Accra.
