Carlos Queiroz Makes Surprise Return As Black Stars Head Coach
Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz has returned to the dugout as head coach of Ghana’s senior national football team, the Black Stars, barely two months after his previous spell with the team came to an end.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed that an agreement has been reached with the experienced coach following discussions involving the football body and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation. Queiroz will begin his fresh mandate during the next international break.
The 73-year-old coach initially took charge of Ghana ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Otto Addo was relieved of his position. Despite having limited time to prepare the squad, Queiroz guided the Black Stars into the knockout stage before their campaign ended with a 1-0 defeat to Colombia.
His return means the Portuguese will immediately have another major assignment on his hands as Ghana prepares for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. The Black Stars are scheduled to face Côte d’Ivoire in home-and-away fixtures during the upcoming international window.
The GFA says Queiroz’s extensive experience in international football, technical knowledge and familiarity with the Black Stars were important factors behind the decision to bring him back. However, the association has not yet disclosed the exact duration or detailed terms of his new mandate.
