Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has denied reports that members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Caucus have summoned him to respond to allegations of extortion leveled against him.
The allegations were made by GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi, who has been involved in a public disagreement with the Minority Leader over issues surrounding GoldBod and the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme. Afenyo-Markin has rejected the allegations and indicated that he is considering his legal options.
Reports earlier suggested that some NPP MPs wanted Afenyo-Markin to appear before the caucus to provide clarification on the matter. However, the Effutu MP has firmly stated that he has not been summoned by his colleagues.
The controversy has added to the growing political debate surrounding GoldBod, particularly over questions about the financial performance of the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme. Both sides have continued to exchange claims and counterclaims as the issue attracts public attention.
Meanwhile, Afenyo-Markin’s denial comes as Parliament reconvenes today, August 24, following its recall from recess to deal with urgent parliamentary business.
The development is expected to remain a major talking point within the NPP Parliamentary Caucus as the dispute surrounding the allegations and GoldBod continues.
