The long-anticipated Accra–Kumasi Expressway project is gradually taking shape as the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) commence initial works along the proposed corridor. The move signals a major step forward in government efforts to improve road connectivity between the southern and middle belts of the country.
Engineering units from the Ghana Army, currently stationed at Asuboa near Akim Oda, have begun extensive land clearing and preparation works to pave the way for full-scale construction. The ongoing activities involve removing vegetation, marking out sections of the route, and preparing the terrain for subsequent phases of the project.
The involvement of the military highlights the strategic importance of the expressway, which is expected to ease congestion on the existing Accra–Kumasi highway. Once completed, the new expressway will significantly reduce travel time, improve road safety, and boost economic activities between Accra and Kumasi—two of Ghana’s busiest commercial hubs.
Residents in communities along the route have started witnessing the early stages of the project, with heavy equipment and personnel deployed to key sections. While some have expressed optimism about the potential economic benefits, others are calling for proper compensation and engagement where land acquisition is involved.
The Accra–Kumasi Expressway forms part of broader national infrastructure development plans aimed at modernising Ghana’s road network. As groundwork progresses, attention will now shift to securing funding, finalize designs, and rolling out full construction in the coming months.
