The Nigerian film industry is in mourning following the death of veteran Yoruba actor and pastor Taiwo Adeshina, widely known by his stage name Elegbeje Ado.
The respected actor reportedly passed away on Monday, June 29, after a brief illness. He was 66 years old. News of his death was confirmed by filmmaker Seun Oloketuyi and fellow actor Kunle Afod, who paid glowing tributes to the late screen icon.
In a heartfelt tribute, Kunle Afod described Elegbeje Ado as one of the legends of Yoruba cinema, praising his talent, dedication and lasting contribution to the growth of the indigenous movie industry. He also extended condolences to the actor’s family, friends, colleagues and fans.
Elegbeje Ado earned widespread recognition for his remarkable performances in traditional and historical Yoruba films, where he frequently portrayed traditional rulers, community elders, herbalists and other culturally significant characters. His stage name was inspired by one of his most celebrated film roles, which became synonymous with his career and endeared him to generations of movie lovers.
Beyond acting, the late actor was also a Christian pastor. He stepped away from mainstream filmmaking in 2016 to focus on ministry before making a return in 2025 to produce Christian-themed movies, reflecting his commitment to both faith and the arts.
His death has triggered an outpouring of grief across the Nigerian entertainment industry, with actors, filmmakers and fans celebrating his enduring legacy and the impact he made on Yoruba-language cinema over several decades.
