New Zealand actor Sam Neill, best known for his iconic role as palaeontologist Dr Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park film franchise, has died at the age of 78.
Neill’s death was announced on Monday, July 13, 2026. His family said his passing in Sydney was sudden and unexpected, with the actor surrounded by loved ones.
The veteran actor enjoyed a career spanning more than five decades and appeared in over 50 films. Beyond Jurassic Park, he was also known for roles in The Hunt for Red October, The Piano and Peaky Blinders.
Neill gained global recognition after starring as Dr Alan Grant in the 1993 blockbuster Jurassic Park. He later reprised the character in Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World Dominion.
The actor had previously battled blood cancer and had recently been declared cancer-free, according to reports. His death has since triggered an outpouring of tributes from fans and colleagues across the global film industry.
Sam Neill is survived by four children.
