Six individuals arrested for illegally dumping refuse at the Otumfuo Roundabout have been convicted by the Prempeh Assembly District Court, in what authorities describe as a firm warning against environmental indiscipline in the city.
The offenders were arraigned before the court and each fined GHS1,200, with an alternative 10-day custodial sentence if they failed to pay. According to reports, five of the convicted persons paid their fines immediately to avoid imprisonment.
However, one of the offenders, Ebenezer Atakorah, failed to settle the fine and is expected to serve the 10-day jail term as ordered by the court.
The conviction is being viewed as part of broader efforts by city authorities to clamp down on indiscriminate waste disposal, which remains a major challenge in many urban areas. Officials say the move should serve as a deterrent to others and reinforce the importance of keeping public spaces clean.
Residents have welcomed the action, with many calling for stricter enforcement of sanitation laws to help improve cleanliness and public health across Kumasi.
