Russia launched one of its largest drone attacks on Ukraine overnight, with hundreds of drones targeting several regions, including areas near the Russian capital, Moscow, as NATO leaders convened in Türkiye for a high-level summit focused on European security and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

According to Ukrainian and Russian officials, air defence systems were activated in multiple locations to intercept the incoming drones, forcing temporary disruptions to air travel and prompting heightened security measures. Authorities reported that several drones were shot down before reaching their intended targets, although damage and casualties were reported in some areas.

The latest wave of attacks comes as the war continues to intensify, with both Russia and Ukraine increasingly relying on long-range drone strikes to target military infrastructure, logistics hubs and strategic facilities deep behind enemy lines.

Meanwhile, the NATO summit in Türkiye has brought together leaders from member states to discuss continued military assistance for Ukraine, regional security and measures to strengthen the alliance’s collective defence capabilities. The conflict in Ukraine remains a central focus of the discussions, alongside broader concerns about stability in Europe.

Ukrainian officials have renewed calls for additional air defence systems and military support, arguing that continued international backing is essential to protect civilians and critical infrastructure from sustained Russian attacks.

The Kremlin has maintained that its military operations are aimed at strategic targets, while Ukraine says the continued strikes demonstrate the need for stronger international support to counter Russia’s offensive.

The war, now in its fourth year, continues to have significant humanitarian, economic and geopolitical consequences, with repeated attacks causing widespread damage to infrastructure and displacing thousands of civilians.
