The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced a cash reward scheme aimed at tackling indiscriminate waste disposal and reducing flooding in the capital city.

According to the Mayor, members of the public who provide credible evidence of individuals dumping refuse into drains and water channels will receive GH¢200 for each offender successfully reported. Under the initiative, a person who reports five offenders could earn as much as GH¢1,000.

The announcement forms part of intensified efforts by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to address one of the major causes of flooding in the city. Blocked drains filled with plastic waste, rubbish, and other debris have long been identified as a key factor behind recurring floods in Accra.

Speaking on the initiative, Mr. Allotey stressed that authorities require complete and usable evidence before action can be taken against offenders. He encouraged residents to actively participate in protecting the city by reporting those who engage in illegal dumping practices.

The Mayor noted that the Assembly is committed to enforcing sanitation by-laws and prosecuting offenders whose actions endanger lives and property. He emphasized that changing public attitudes toward waste disposal is just as important as improving drainage infrastructure in the fight against flooding.

The reward scheme has already sparked conversations among residents, with many welcoming the move as a practical way to involve citizens in maintaining cleanliness and environmental responsibility across the capital.

As Accra continues to battle seasonal flooding, city authorities hope the incentive will discourage irresponsible waste disposal and promote a cleaner, safer environment for all.
