A serving police officer, Inspector Bright Appiah Danquah, has been arrested in Kumasi for his alleged involvement in a series of armed robbery attacks targeting mobile money vendors across the city, a case that has shocked many residents and raised fresh concerns about trust within the security services.
According to reports, the officer became a suspect after allegedly leaving his mobile phone at one of the robbery scenes during an operation. The abandoned device reportedly provided investigators with a crucial lead, helping them trace connections to multiple robbery incidents involving mobile money operators in different parts of Kumasi.
In a surprising twist, Inspector Danquah is said to have later visited a police station to officially report the phone as stolen, apparently unaware that investigators had already linked the device to the crimes. Authorities allegedly used the phone and other pieces of evidence to connect him to the ongoing robbery investigations.
The arrest has sparked widespread public reaction, especially among mobile money vendors who have increasingly become targets of armed attacks in recent years. Many are now calling for stronger security measures and greater protection for operators who handle large sums of cash daily.
Police authorities are expected to continue investigations as the suspect faces possible prosecution if found guilty. The case has also renewed conversations around accountability and integrity within Ghana’s security institutions.
