National Tenants Union Petitions Government, Proposes Sweeping Reforms to Improve Ghana’s Housing Sector
The National Tenants Union of Ghana has formally submitted a petition and a comprehensive housing policy proposal to the Ministry of Housing through the Rent Control Department, calling for urgent reforms to address the country’s growing housing challenges and strengthen the protection of tenants’ rights.
The proposal outlines a series of recommendations aimed at improving Ghana’s housing system, making accommodation more affordable, and ensuring fairness in landlord-tenant relationships. According to the Union, the current housing situation continues to place a heavy financial burden on many Ghanaians, with rising rent costs, inadequate enforcement of tenancy laws, and limited access to affordable housing.
The Union believes the proposed reforms will help create a more transparent, equitable, and efficient housing sector while reducing conflicts between landlords and tenants. Among the key areas highlighted are the need for stronger tenant protections, effective regulation of rental practices, improved enforcement of existing housing laws, and the development of policies that encourage affordable housing projects.
In its petition, the National Tenants Union urged the Ministry of Housing and the Rent Control Department to carefully consider the recommendations and incorporate them into future housing policies and legislative reforms. The organization stressed that comprehensive changes are necessary to safeguard the rights of tenants while also creating a balanced environment that supports both landlords and renters.
The Union expressed optimism that the government will engage relevant stakeholders to review the proposals and implement practical solutions capable of addressing Ghana’s housing deficit and improving living conditions for citizens.
The petition comes at a time when concerns over rising rent prices, housing shortages, and tenant welfare continue to dominate public discussions, with many Ghanaians calling for decisive government action to reform the country’s housing sector.
